Yes We Did - CafePress T-Shirt Sales Predict 2008 Presidential Winner

CafePress Election Meter Fueled by Designs and Purchases Selects Obama as Winner

SAN MATEO, CA November 11, 2008 - The 2008 presidential election solicited an unprecedented response from the nation, manifesting in record voter turn-out, an energized nation, and millions of expressive user-designed t-shirts, buttons and other merchandise. Beginning in November of 2007, CafePress, the leader of user-generated commerce, began watching the sales of merchandise supporting each presidential candidate - predicting that the sales would be a leading indicator of the winner on November 4, 2008.

CafePress witnessed its community of 6.5 million users creating, buying and selling election-related designs that expressed their political passions and points of view about the election and presidential hopefuls. To date a total of over 2.8 million Barack Obama-related products, and 1.7 million supporting John McCain have been created on CafePress.

The one-of-a-kind CafePress election meter quantified national sentiments by tracking designs created by users and products sold for each presidential hopeful. From long shots like Stephen Colbert and Michael Bloomberg to party nominees Obama and John McCain, the meter captured the campaign nuances and, ultimately, predicted the winner.

Beginning in early January, it became clear that Barack Obama was leading all candidates in sales; and by Election Day, he had captured nearly 50 percent of sales since November 2007. John McCain came in second with 20 percent of overall sales. The meter can be seen at

The end of the election does not signal an end to election designs, however. The CafePress community is busy at work with reactionary designs and forecasts for the future ahead - including a new popular slogan for Barack Obama supporters - "Yes We Did!"

To date CafePress users have designed over 65,000 different "Yes We Did" products. To browse and shop these election designs, please visit:
